Annual Exhibition 2011

Venue: Beeston Library - Tuesday 1st March to Thursday 31st March 2011

2011 will be a print only exhibition. The categories are Mono, Colour, Natural History. This is a reminder to all members to think about their entries, because it is an opportunity for their work to be seen by the public. There is a fee of £1.00 per entry. Entry forms will be available on club night in December and via email. Entries, plus entry form, together with the full entry fee should be handed to Mike Leatherland, exhibition secretary on 6th January 2011 club night.

EAC Photographic Award 2010

The Elderly Accommodation Counsel invites amateur photographers who are over the age of 60 years to enter our first photographic competition. There is no entry fee and the deadline for entries is 31 October 2010.

We are looking for entries which depict older people in a positive light within the themes of:

Changing Password

The 'Change my Password' facility which you can get to once you log in is now working. All members are advised to periodically change their passwords and not to share them with anyone else. For maximum security use passwords with upper and lower case letters, numbers and other characters.

Sports photography

With the aid of many superb images taken at sporting events, Beeston Camera Club’s visiting speaker David White described how the difference between a good and merely average sports photograph can be due to a fraction of a second’s delay at the point of pressing the camera shutter. As he wryly put it, the more he practises, the luckier he gets! David’s pictures covered sports as diverse as cricket, motocross and yachting, in fact something to please everyone in the appreciative audience.

Photo contest

Beeston Camera Club’s first competition of the season was judged by David Gibbins who had the task of assessing almost ninety prints before deciding on the winners. Awarding marks out of a possible 20, maximum points in the monochrome section went to both David Severn and Alan Thompson. In second place with 19 points each were Jen Mason and Brankica Ilic.
In the colour prints section, winners were David Severn and Len White, each scoring 20. Second place was shared jointly by Jamie MacArthur, Jen Mason and Simon Wilkinson with 19 points each. David congratulated all entrants on the very high standards of their work.

Professional’s photo advice

Professional photographer Alan Thompson of Beeston gave members of Beeston Camera Club an insight into his career from the time he first picked up a camera to the award-winning status he enjoys today.
Illustrated with examples from his wide portfolio, Alan described the different challenges presented by wedding, portrait and commercial photography and the various approaches necessary to achieve the high quality pictures demanded by clients.
For example, his ability to make subjects relax in portrait photography is as important as the lighting and technical skills he employs.
The large audience was especially appreciative that Alan had stepped in at the last minute as a replacement for the programmed speaker.

Practical photo session

In a departure from its more usual programme Beeston Camera Club staged a practical evening which gave newcomers the opportunity to learn new skills based on the experience and knowledge of more experienced members. Similar sessions may be held in the future depending on the feedback received. The Beeston club goes from strength to strength in attracting new members, perhaps not surprising given the increasing interest in photography as a result of the digital revolution. No previous experience is necessary to join, and a warm welcome is given to everyone who turns up at the 8pm Thursday meetings at the Victory Club, Station Road. Technical Photo Demonstration

To capture detail in both the brightest highlights and the deepest shadows in a photograph can be very difficult and is a challenge which regularly frustrates photographers. Beeston Camera Club’s latest visiting speaker, Alan Woolhouse, was able to demonstrate a technique known as HDR (High Dynamic Range) whereby multiple exposures are merged by specialist software to produce a picture which includes all of the detail present in the original scene. Whether the resulting photograph is appealing is subjective – Alan describes the effect as being similar to Marmite – you either love it or hate it!

Print Master

Beeston Camera Club’s visiting speaker Colin Lusby of Lincolnshire presented a series of photographic prints which demonstrated his progression from traditional darkroom processing to a mastery of the latest digital techniques. Colin’s black and white prints underline his understanding of the importance of tone in monochrome, something which he occasionally includes in his more recent digital work. With characteristic humour, he stressed that his chosen locations for landscape photography are those which include a nearby tea room serving cream teas and chocolate cake!
Meetings take place at 8pm on Thursdays at the Victory Club, Station Road, Beeston.

Photo club’s new season
Beeston Camera Club’s new season got off to a good start with a presentation by club president Guy Mansford. Guy’s summer visit to Australia and Asia was the subject of his interesting talk which he illustrated with his photographs of Sydney, Perth and the temples of Bangkok. A buffet prepared by Eunice Price and Iris Martin followed, during which members had the opportunity to discuss the new season’s programme which includes a mix of visiting speakers, members’ technical evenings, internal competitions and displays of award-winning photographs. Welcome Back

Beeston Camera Club opens its new season on 3 September with the traditional presentation by its club president. Guy Mansford’s summer visit to Australia and the Far East may give a clue to his chosen subject, but on the other hand the audience may be in for a surprise. A full and varied programme has been prepared for the coming season, so there is something to please everyone, whether beginners or more advanced photographers. Ownership of expensive photo equipment is not a necessity as many members have shown it is possible to produce striking images even with modest compact cameras.
